Superior Septic Pros in Alaska

Septic systems are probably one of the least appreciated technological innovations that we rely on daily. But just consider this, without them, our environment in Alaska, would be significantly more polluted with human and household waste. Before septic systems most waste simply drained directly into our local Alaska water supply.

Outhouses were the predominate style of bathroom with most of them positioned over a large pit where human waste was collected. When the pit filled, the outhouse was just rebuilt in a new location. Septic systems offer huge advantages over this approach.

The First Septic Tank The innovation of the septic system is credited to John (Jean) Mouras. In 1860, he built a simple concrete system in the backyard of his home in France. He used clay pipes to take the waste from the bathroom in the house to the tank in the yard. When 10 years had passed, the tank was opened and it was discovered that only liquid remained. There was little, if any solid material. After discussing his findings with scientists he patented his system in 1881. By 1883, septic systems had made their way to the US and after WWll the innovation took off.

Current Concerns in Alaska

At the time, there were almost no restraints with respect to how septic systems were built or maintained. It wasnt until the 1970s that the municipalities started to pay attention and enact legislation in Alaska to ensure minimum standards were met.

And so, while septic systems were a major advancement of the time, many are still worried about the environmental impact of some old systems in Alaska. When septic systems fail, the result can be hazardous waste leaching into local environs, including city food and water supplies. Because of this serious and real possibility, which has lead to an abundance of by-laws and regulations regarding the proper installation and maintenance of septic systems by local municipalities and governing bodies. Interestingly, septic only causes problems when it's not working properly. In most cases, septic systems fail because of improper or lack of maintenance.
